A Guide to Looking After Skin

A Guide to Looking After Skin

It may be obvious to say that skin is vital to the body, but how is someone supposed to look after it properly?

With so much information on looking after the skin, it is easy to be confused about where to start. This piece will act as a guide for the basics of looking after the skin!

Determining Skin Type

The first step to looking after skin is to determine what type the skin is that needs looking after. There are five main categories of skin types which include:

Normal

Normal skin has a good balance of sebum production, which means the skin is neither too dry nor too oily. It also has adequate blood circulation.

Dry

Dry skin can feel tight, sometimes rough, and can have a flaky texture. It can also feel irritated and sometimes itchy.

Oily

Oily skin is greasy in appearance, and this is due to excess production of sebum. Oily skin is also prone to breakouts and clogged pores.

Sensitive

Sensitive skin is often characterized by its reaction to different things such as food or products. New beauty products can often cause an adverse reaction in sensitive skin, but other products such as laundry detergent or scented sanitary products are also something that can aggravate sensitive skin.

Combination

A combination skin type is a mixture of any of the above, which often sees different skin types dominating different areas of the face, i.e, an oily t-zone and dry cheeks, or sensitive cheeks and dry nose, etc.

Cleansing the Skin

The first step of a skincare regime is to cleanse. This might seem like an odd step if someone doesn’t wear makeup, but actually, all skin needs cleansing. Skin can pick up all the debris of a day, which includes dust and environmental pollution. It can be surprising to see what is left on a cotton pad after a day out!

Find a cleansing product suitable for the right skin type and follow the instructions for clean, healthy skin!

Skin Treatments

Skin treatments can be a fantastic option for those with specific skin goals and can offer some tremendous benefits for many. It is crucial that the right skin treatment is picked for the right skin type; otherwise, they can have adverse effects.

That being said, there are some treatments that are suitable for all skin types, such as a microcurrent facial, which can offer fantastic anti-aging results.

Moisturizing the Skin & SPF

Moisturizing is extremely important for the skin, both inside and out. Make sure to stay hydrated so that the skin stays moisturized from within, but also take care of the outer layer of the skin with a decent moisturizer suitable for the right skin type. If possible, purchase a moisturizer with a medium to high SPF to combine the two tasks.

If that is not possible, find a separate SPF to also apply to the skin. SPF is crucial to the health of the skin as it protects from damaging sun rays which can cause premature aging and skin cancers.
