The Best Of The Wedding Dress

A look back at the best trends of ’14. A look forward to the coming trends of ’15.

In a quiet part of country near the Malvern Hills, surrounded by an ancient moat is one of loveliest wedding venues in the West Midlands. There is a chill on the air, enough to be able to see your breathe mist, but inside the grange I come across a hive of activity and the tempting smell of mulled wine. Preparations are being made for one of Birtsmorton Court’s famous winter weddings. Log fires are being stoked and everywhere is the busy to and fro of caterers and delivery men.

In a quiet moment, I hole up with one of Birtsmorton Court’s wedding planners and our talk soon turns to one of my favourite topics, wedding dresses. Drawing close to the end of February it’s a nice opportunity to talk through the trends and fashions she’s seen since last year come through the wedding venue.

One of the most regular appearances being the lace sleeves made popular by a certain royal wedding you might have heard the occasional mention of. In terms of shape Birtsmorton’s wedding planner extraordinaire said that the year had seen polar extremes. From full, frothy ball gowns to minimal, svelte silhouettes. Influence for the latter surely coming from the art deco style made popular by the Great Gatsby, which is probably also responsible for the prevalence of the intricate beading seen all over wedding dresses throughout the year.

From their galleries, the lace sleeved dress, one of 2014’s favourite styles.

And now that the winter is almost done it is entirely reasonable to start getting excited about 2015’s wedding dresses. Some trends are going to be along similar lines to this year, some completely new. The ball gowns are staying, re-imagined in light flowing shapes, a style led by Vera Wang and Marchesa. Of course Oscar de la Renta can always be relied upon for his beautiful, classic full skirts, and many of his 2015 designs are sporting the neckline of choice for this year, the ‘off the shoulder’ look. Another trend continuing on is the minimal look. Clean lines, figure hugging cuts. In 2015, less is more, but then again, according to other designers, more is more. I didn’t say it wasn’t confusing. I guess we’re lucky, a trend for every taste.

So, if you’re getting married in 2015 and are currently drowning in ‘wedding dress ideas’ pins. Although Pinterest, especially for wedding planning is amazing, start here:

My advice? Curl up on a cold winter’s night with these high end wedding dress runways.

This is Marchesa’s Spring 2015 show. Not only is it a parade of one amazing dress after another, but also filled with great hair and makeup inspiration. Ethereal is indeed the word.

Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2015 Bridal collection. If classic beauty is your style, this is the one to watch, with it’s on trend ‘off the shoulder’ looks.

Vera Wang’s Fall /Winter 14/15 collection. Full of colour and 50’s femininity, it’s something a little different.

It’s the diverse colour of this last video that is going to be the biggest trend shake up of 2015. As well as Vera Wang’s pinks, the wedding catwalks have been alive with blues, greys and even greens. So if you are looking for something a little different for your own dress, perhaps a non-traditional colour choice is the way to go. For something even more adventurous, the cut out and crop top wedding dress coming trend is taking wedding dress design to a whole new place. With some of the most ground breaking designs by Reem Acra.

So in perfect wedding style, something old, something new. A look back, a look forwards, and it seems 2015 is going to be an exciting year for all things bridal. As always a big thank you for all the trusty advice from the lovely wedding planners at Birtsmorton Court. Now, time for some more mulled wine. ‘Tis the season after all.
